Chevelle – Sci-Fi Crimes

SciFiCrimesThe fifth studio album, Sci-Fi Crimes, from Chevelle has hit store shelves, has been uploaded to online retailer’s pages, and should be pouring out of your speakers by now. As a three-piece band, they’ve evolved very little over the years, changing out one bassist for another (from a brother to a brother-in-law), and even their music has evolved very little. Normally, that would be a bad thing.

Often compared to early Tool, especially Peter Loeffler’s vocals, Chevelle hasn’t done much to alter their sound over the last five albums. Every album gives you ten-plus songs that are all pretty radio friendly in length and content. Every song is catchy with a grooving bass-line, a memorable chorus and hook. The question is though, why isn’t Chevelle more well known? Why isn’t their following bigger?

The band debuted at the height of an onslaught of bands that sounded exactly the same: Nickleback, Default, Tantric, and Creed. They had that big hit “The Red” and other successful singles, “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)” and “Send the Pain Below,” but ever since their album sales have done dismal business. The tragedy is that every album is solid from start to finish. You’d be hard pressed to name bands that can do that time and time again, especially when you’re getting to their fifth album.

From their debut album Point #1 to their major label release Wonder What’s Next, This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) (my personal favorite), to Vena Sera, until now with Sci-Fi Crimes Chevelle continues to record quality post-grunge hard rock music, struggling to find a bigger audience amongst the flooded genre. Throw your 3 Doors Down albums away and drop your old Godsmack mp3’s in your recycle bin. Chevelle is far better and still releasing new songs.

  1. Sci-Fi Crimes is one of the best albums that has been released this year. It has the heaviness and melodic portions like in past Chevelle works, but it is still a bit different. I love this album, but it is not my favorite Chevelle album. This Type of Thinking and Vena Sera are my top runners. Sci-Fi Crimes brings its own, however. With songs like Jars, Sleep Apnea, This Circus, Letter From a Thief, and Fell Into Your Shoes, this cd is just amazing. I recommend that everyone should buy it, because you will not be disappointed.

  2. Chevelle is awesome! They deserve to be recognized for their amazing-ness. Sci-Fi Crimes is really great! :D

  3. I couldn’t agree more with review. I totally went out to Best Buy and bought their new album Sci-Fi Crimes and love every track (not sure about “Interlewd”, but I’m sure there’s a story with it and something worth putting on the CD). The next button is something you never have to click with Chevelle’s albums, with other bands you have to skip most the tracks to get to their only good song the CD. Evolving is something I hate when it comes to music. Bands going soft or loosing their original sound. I know Chevelle is a freaking great band that doesn’t get enough credit. I think if Chevelle got more airtime on radio stations they would have more fans and the fans they already have are really legit and devoted!
