Thrice – Beggars

BeggarsThe beginning of what’s turning out to be a fairly exciting Fall release schedule has fired off with what may become the best rock album of the year. With albums on their way by Saosin, A.F.I., The Used, and most importantly, Brand New and Muse, the next couple of months are shaping up to be incredible for rock music. Thrice’s Beggars was supposed to be released in October, however the Vagrant Records promotional stream was copied and leaked on file sharing programs and the band responded. There is now a version for sale as of this past Tuesday on iTunes, with a physical release due September 15th, along with two B-sides and a studio version of The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter.”

Using what they learned with the release of Vheissu and The Alchemy Index, Thrice has created a sound that fuses their earlier punk sound with an influence of U2 circa-Achtung, Baby!. Take all of that and mix in the want to create an album a little bit more uplifting and brighter, and you have Beggars, a slightly more mainstream release that is every bit of excellent.

Although there are only ten tracks to Beggars, there isn’t one song that clocks in less than three minutes and thirty-three seconds, making this album hard to describe as “radio friendly.” That being said though, you get to enjoy almost forty-nine full minutes of brand new Thrice material, and more when the physical release hits shelves. Most notably though, is how solid this album is from start to finish. There isn’t a weak song on Beggars, which is difficult to report these days, with “All the World is Mad” getting a Guitar Hero release on a Vagrant Track Pack.

Thrice has been a band riddled with pigeon-holes, trying to nail them dead to a genre, be it post-hardcore, experimental, alternative, punk, whatever, and that is probably why they are not as well known as they should be. They refuse to release something that sounds exactly the same as what they’ve done before (see over-rated bands: Weezer, The Offspring, etc.) and that is, without any doubt, why the promise of another Thrice album release is more exciting than the last. It will be different than what you have heard before, and it will be better than the last.

Beggars can be purchased on iTunes HERE now.
Beggars will be sold in stores September 15th.
