The good ones go too early: Firefly

I know I’m about four years late jumping on this small but rabidly loyal bandwagon, but I’m just discovering what an impressive show Firefly is. It’s like a great Western, with spaceships.

Firefly was created and produced by Joss Whedon, the man who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and wrote Astonishing X-Men, arguably the best X-Men comic of the last decade or so. The guy’s got talent to spare, and his touch for creating unique characters, and authoring brilliant dialogue, is completely on display here.

Unfortunately, the show only lasted one season. Its small, devoted fanbase was not enough to keep it going. But that same cult following, which became very vocal after the show’s cancellation, gave Whedon and Co. enough pull to produce a feature length film, Serenity, to finish up the story. Serenity is just as impressive as the series.

Both are available on DVD. Go. Now.
