DeLeon Demicoli – White Belts
Caleb is one of those headset toting toolbags selling overpriced clothing to the people that shop in stores where they pump the retailer’s “scent” through the ventilation system. He’s in the running for a promotion that he’s not sure he really wants, as he views it as one more step toward permanence in the world of retail, and he’s sure that being a clothing store jockey folding tried-on jeans is a surefire way not to impress the ladies. What’s ironic about said position, he has found a way to entertain unhappily married women on a scheduled basis in the fitting rooms.
However, Caleb finds that he wants more in a relationship than just what goes on in the fluorescent lit confines of a handicapped fitting room, and so he starts a group similar to that of Project Mayhem, where he teaches the less-than-impressive married men to be better lovers to his unhappy clients, and then Caleb’s friend Ricky teaches them martial arts. When he’s not waxing positions or judo-chops with Ricky’s band of un-merry men, Caleb spends his free time with Tabitha, the proprietor of a sexual aid store. Despite his general malaise, all is pretty all right in Caleb’s world until, The Voice gets involved.
DeLeon Demicoli is the author of White Belts and his previous novel, Lick Me, on his own imprint, P’NK Books. He writes with a minimalist’s hand while taking the noir genre and updating it in the voice of a man walking amongst us. His main characters live and breathe, they sit beside you as you turn the page. And what’s wonderful to watch is the progression in which Demicoli’s storytelling grows.
His plots are rich with twists and turns, always sure to keep you guessing, and in the span of one novel, his prose has bettered itself like a fine wine in fast forward. Some of his metaphors and similes leave little to be desired at times, but its the story that drives his work, the characters that lure you into the next chapter and beyond.
